PROM SEASON NIGHTMARE!
5/16/2014
![]() It’s that time again! PROM SEASON! One of the most important days in a girl’s life other than her wedding day! It is time to get the dress that will make heads turn, jaws drop and traffic stop! Yes, THAT dress! During this time the price does not even matter. It is all about what looks good on YOU! I know! I have been there. I had to get my nails, hair and toes done! I had to look amazing! It was prom! Senior prom only happens once! Everyone wants to look like they just stepped out of a magazine, with that cute guy on their arm! Am I right? But what happens when things don't go your way? What happens if you don’t have a date? What if the guy you want to go to prom with already has date? What if your boyfriend just broke up with you months before prom? What do you do? Do you stay home and cry while everyone goes out and has fun and posts pictures on IG? Of course NOT! Let me tell you my story… It was 2006 and I was super excited about prom! I had a boyfriend at the time and we were planning on the colors we should wear and what we were going to do afterwards. Unfortunately, we did not make it to prom. I was left dateless! What was I going to do? I couldn't go by myself! Who does that? My sister was telling me that I could go with my girlfriends. I looked at her like she 8 heads! Going with a bunch of girls was UNHEARD of! I was not doing that! What do I look like, A LOSER? (That is how I felt at the time). So what did I do? Desperate times called for desperate measures! After I crossed off all of the guys from my High School I asked my cousin to help me. I had him ask his friend if he would go with me. PRAISE GOD because he accepted the request! We talked on the phone for several weeks, got to know each other and sent discussed our colors. (Did mention that I met him at church camp a few months prior?) Fast forward to the day of the prom! I was excited, pumped, nervous and happy all at the same time... until I saw my date. Don’t get me wrong he was handsome and tall, just right! I had a problem with the fact that he didn’t brush or do his hair! He stepped out the car with his hair looking like Side Show Bob from The Simpsons (See image to the right)! I wanted to cry. The first thing that came to my head was, “He is going to ruin my pictures!” (I am getting mad just thinking about it) I wanted to go off but my mom told me to calm down because his mom drove a long way so he could come to my prom. “Yes mother, I will listen, BUT he could have at least brushed and gelled his hair!” Anywho, we took our pictures with family and friends and go to prom! I brushed my feelings to the side (no pun intended) and decided to have a good time because IT’S PROM and I’m with my girlfriends! What could go wrong? Nothing! Other than the fact that my date didn’t want to dance, at ALL! He was on his phone for more than half the night and on top of that one of my classmates was trying to get his number. EXCUSE ME! I know this girl is not trying to talk to MY PROM date who I am kind of mad with at the moment. SMH. I still danced with my friends, took pictures and laughed. I had a great time with my girls! Then it rained! LOL. He was a gentleman and let me borrow his coat. When it came time for pictures I had an attitude. I didn’t even want to take pictures! Uugh. (I thought I got over these feelings, but as I write this I am getting angry again.. WOOSAH!) I took the stupid pictures and enjoyed the rest of my prom. (Please don't get me wrong, my date was a great person, I appreciate the sacrifice. He just was not good for me.) To make a long story short. I wish I would have went with my girlfriends than this date from …far far away. You live and you learn. My advice ladies, don’t settle for whatever or go pick a stud from a dud tree. Prom is supposed to be a time of creating memories with your friends. Friends last longer than boyfriends! Friends are forever! Boys come and go like seasons but a true friend is there for a lifetime. Don’t get caught up in the glitz and glamour of prom that you forget to enjoy yourself. After this moment real life hits, so enjoy it! Live. Laugh. Dance and make memories! Prom is what you make it, not who you go with! Don’t forget it! And as always… don’t forget your confidence! I thought it would be a great idea for you to send me pictures of your dress! Send WYC a pic of your dress via email to [email protected] or on IG by using the hashtag #wycprom! All contestants will be entered into a drawing to win cool prizes and FREE WYC Merchandise! How does a free gift card to your favorite store sound! Send the pics! *Don't forget your confidence
