You Can Have The "Perfect Body."
11/12/2014
The latest Victoria’s Secret ad shows 10 beautiful women posed in lingerie with the words, “The Perfect ‘Body’” in bold, in front of fit, slim models. You’re probably asking yourself what’s the big deal; it’s just Victoria’s Secret, that’s what they do? Well, what if I told you that this very ad caused uproar in the United Kingdom. Many feel that this ad was sending a negative body image to the rest of the world. I have to say that I 100% agree. I am not going to bash Victoria’s Secret and the way they advertise. That’s not my thing. I am aware of their Body by Victoria bras and I know this ad is selling the “perfect” bra, but the models behind the words “The Perfect ‘Body’” are what make me feel …. (I don’t know how I feel right now). It’s not fair to the millions of girls and women who see this and feel inadequate. Yes, I know, life is not fair blah, blah, blah cry me a river, but I still feel some type of way. Yes, I felt weird, my head tilted to the side and I squinted a bit (the same way a dog does when it’s confused). Yes! Me, feeling weird. Don’t think that because I am skinny that I don’t feel feelings when I see ads like this. We all have insecurities and flaws, things we want to change but can’t. To be honest, many of you want to look like these models when these models don’t even look like these models! You fall in love with fake, photoshopped images. Ok, back to the ad. In response to the ad a New York City-based retailer created a positive parody of the ad produced by VS. I love it! This picture represents real women and real bodies! *Scroll down to see the image* Advertisements are here to promote their product by any means necessary. They are not here to make you feel good about yourself, boost your confidence or say things that are correct (THAT’S WHAT I’M HERE FOR). It is about money, sales and how often people are sharing and talking about their product. That is why it is so important to NOT base your importance on what you see in the media. You have to love yourself! Who cares if the ad is subliminally telling us what the perfect body is or looks like? It is up to us girls, ladies and women to not be affected, not compare ourselves and not hate on the models or other people we see in the ads. They are doing a job. We have to know who we are, accept it and be confident that God didn’t make any mistakes when He created us. Maybe if enough of us speak up about the unfair advertisements maybe, just maybe there will be a change, until then we have to know who we are, accept our flaws and love every single nook and cranny about ourselves and our bodies! It is up to you and me to feel accepted and loved. God loves and accepts you! When He sent Jesus to die on the cross for you that was out of love! Who else do you know would willingly die for you? God created you in His image! You can’t let other people, advertisements or your Facebook friends define you or tell you what the "Perfect Body" is! The truth is your body is the perfect body! Don't be fooled! Let God tell you who you are! You are so much more than you think! *Don’t forget your confidence What are your thoughts on the ad? (Survey) Click here to read the article.

I find the Victoria's Secret ad interesting. Initially, I look at the ad and think, "perfect"?! Try again & there isn't a great deal of diversity as far as the models are concerned. After looking at the response ad from NY, I returned to the VS ad and noticed the word body in ""; further, the words to follow, I believe is an effort to describe/attract you (said reader/viewer) to the collection. I think it's a failed attempt at creative advertising, although it's very eye catching. I think they could've come up with a more appealing way to get the collection out. I didn't vote in the poll because I suppose I'm conflicted. Overall, if I don't agree with the company's sense of tasteful/appropriate methods of appeal, I won't support as a consumer. Thanks for the thought-provoking post!
